29. Early Douglas Industry and Docks

Looking south across the Kalamazoo River to Douglas.
This photo shows in the foreground a stave mill on the Saugatuck (north) side of the Kalamazoo River. To the right, a causeway and bridge leads to the Douglas side of the river.
Across the river, the four buildings closest to the bridge are the Douglas basket factory and its drying barns. To the left is Wade’s Bayou with its docks, warehouses, tannery, lumber mill and flour mills. Further inland is Douglas House Tavern and Hotel (formerly Wade’s/Eagle Tavern), a boxed windmill (Center and Main Streets) and Dutcher Lodge . The bell cupola of the 1866 Douglas Union School is visible above the basket Factory site.
