I must write this story about a wonderful friendship of a dog and a man. This dog is a golden retriever belonging to Robert Wicks, who lives across the street from our summer home in Douglas, Mich., where we spend our weekends. Eight years ago, Ginger came over to explore our grounds and that's how I became acquainted with her. I treated her with bones and cookies which she ate eagerly. When I come up on Friday nights, after a four-hour drive, Ginger recognizes me and gives me the warmest welcome that any human being can ever desire. It is so heart-warming, so absorbing and recuperative for a tired fellow. Every morning Ginger is waiting for me to come out, to take our walk to the store on the main street. This golden retriever never makes undue demands, but one thing she likes best is to take a ride in the car. As soon as I open the door she dashes into the back seat and proudly behaves like a lady being chauffeuered. Occasionally I will take along Bob Wicks' three boys, Robert, Donald and Randy. They are good company. During my siestas on our terrace or in the cold evenings of early spring and fall, Ginger is always beside me before the fireplace, relaxing and snoozing. This golden retriever has also given pleasure to our nieces and nephews, relatives and friends who visit our summer cottage and every last one of them admires the behavior of this unusual dog. Anyone can see it, feel it, and know it that this is the calm enjoyment of friendship between a man and a dog, and one can't help but admire such an animal, because Ginger displays a shining example of good will and good life.
