Big Pavilion 1909-1960

From "Collecting the Lakeshore" 2025-2026 at the History Center main floor gallery Big Pavilion Broadside 1917 | letterpress This flier printed by the Commercial Record describes the end of summer events planned at the Big Pavilion. The poster doesn’t mention a year, but the Wednesday August 29th detail may solve the mystery. Only the years 1917 and 1923 match up with that day/date combination on the calendar. It is noteworthy that Labor Day was an important event even back in 1917 that marked the unofficial end of summer! How did vacationers and townspeople celebrate at the Big Pavilion? What differences do you notice between this poster and the 1942 pavilion poster example across the gallery? This is a remarkable survival of an ephemeral artifact only intended to last for “about a day” so you can appreciate the care it has received over the last 100-plus years!
