Badge, GAR James M. Pond Post

1994.01.01

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was formed in 1866, following the end of the Civil War to support veterans, especially the wounded survivors. Membership was open to the honorably discharged that served between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865. The organization advocated for veterans' pensions and helped establish Memorial Day as a national holiday. Local chapters of the GAR were called "Posts." The GAR post represented on this badge was named for Saugatuck Civil War veteran James M. Pond and was founded in 1903.
