Kalamazoo River 1
Painting
One of two oil paintings supposed to be a depiction of the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. The painting depicts a spooky house on a hill overlooking a body of water. A watercraft with smoke rising from its stack cruises by. The house and an ornate fence has been over painted in black. In the lower right corner is the text "Home 1888."
The painting's frame is gold with four bands of textured, botanical motifs.
Written on the back of the canvas is the text "Painting restored by Elita Smutney and Val Legatz 1971" and a partial shipping tag from R.C. Bird, manufacturer of window shades and wide width cloths, Chicago.

Oil
Paired with painting 2013.38.01, that depicts a rustic cabin on the same riverbank about 40 years earlier, this work visualizes the settler's pride in their growing prosperity. Paintings are reported to be from the home of Edda Diffler, a school teacher from Chicago. She bought the house from John Utton.
